Orientation
Helping to deliver a baby is a truly awesome experience.
Here are a few basic concepts to master.
Labor = uterine contractions leading to progressive dilation and effacement of the cervix. Is your patient in labor?
The labor process is often described as involving the 3 P's: the powers, the passenger and the pelvis. As you observe women in labor, think about what other P's might be involved from a Family Medicine perspective.

Labor Curve or Friedman's Curve: is a graphic illustration of the stages of labor, plotting progress in dilation and station over time. In 2010, the Zhang curve changed our thinking about labor progress.

Electronic Fetal Monitoring is used to follow the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions during labor in most US hospitals. Much of your time will be spent reviewing strips and documenting findings of EFM. Learn the difference between the 3 categories of tracings. Dr. Bailey’s article in American Family Physician provides an excellent introduction. For a thorough review see ACOG Bulletin 106 July 2009

Residents must complete the GNOSSIS EFM course and exam before starting L&D.
